MERIT BADGE INFORMATION

This Page Last Updated on 01/20/2005

Merit Badges are required for Star, Life, and Eagle Ranks, but may be earned at anytime after joining the Troop. Scouts must obtain a Application for Merit Badge Application (Blue Card) from the Scoutmaster before they start work on a Merit Badge. Merit Badge books are available for common Merit Badges at the Scout Shack. Scouts can borrow a Merit Badge book by contacting the Troop Librarian. Merit Badge books for other Merit Badges can be purchased at the Valley Scout Shop or Westside Service Center's Scout Shop. It is highly recommended to choose a Merit Badge Counselor and call them to discuss the requirements prior to working on the Merit Badge.

Signed Merit Badge Applications (blue cards) are available from the Scoutmaster and MUST BE PRESENTED TO THE COUNSELOR. It is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED that all merit badges are earned with a "buddy." If you have an appointment with a merit badge counselor, take a buddy, or a parent to your appointment. DO NOT GO ALONE. Names of local Merit Badge counselors are available by asking the Scoutmaster.

Merit Badge Applications returned with missing information, or that is illegible, will be returned and no Merit Badge ordered.

On the application Scouts must write neatly and include their name and full address. The Unit is  Troop 113. The District is Crescent Bay (CB) and the Council is the Western Los Angeles County Council (WLACC). On the counselor’s portion the applicant is the Scout. Turn-in completed cards to the Scoutmaster or Advancement Chairperson. See sample below:

TRY NOT TO LOSE THE APPLICANT’S RECORD when it is returned to you. This card is extremely important when approaching the rank of Eagle. Collect your applicant record in a plastic sleeve (like a baseball card sheet).

• PARTIAL MERIT BADGE CARDS

If you have a partial merit badge card (a merit badge that was started but not completed) save your application in a special place. You can complete your merit badge later as long as you finish by your 18th birthday.

If you do not understand any of this information, read your handbook for more information. Then contact the Scoutmaster or Advancement Chairperson  for additional information.
