Troop Definition of Requirements are in Red

NOTE: These requirements may be worked on simultaneously with those for Second Class and First Class; however these ranks must be earned in sequence.

  1. Present yourself to your leader, properly dressed, before going on an overnight camping trip. Show the camping gear you will use. Show the right way to pack and carry it. Scout must arrive at the Scout Shack for a campout in Class B uniform (or Class A if required for campout) with personal camping equipment properly packed in a duffle bag or backpack. Scout must show the equipment they have packed and have all Troop 12 essentials with them.
  2. Spend at least one night on a patrol or troop campout. Sleep in a tent you have helped pitch. Scout must PROPERLY pitch their tent with their tent partner and sleep in it on a Troop or Patrol campout. Emerald Bay does not count for this requirement.
  3. On the campout, assist in preparing and cooking one of your patrol's meals.  Tell why it is important for each patrol member to share in meal preparation and cleanup, and explain the importance of eating together. Scout must ASSIST in preparing and cooking a meal for their Patrol. Scout must be able to verbalize why it is important for Patrol members to share meal preparation and clean up, and why eating together is important.
  4. a. Demonstrate how to whip and fuse the ends of a rope. Scout must whip and fuse the ends of a rope.
  5. b. Demonstrate you know how to tie the following knots and tell what their uses are: two half hitches and the taut-line hitch. Scout must tie a two half hitch and taut-line hitch and give tell when to use each knot.
  6. Explain the rules of safe hiking, both on the highway and cross-country, during the day and at night. Explain what to do if you are lost. Scout must be able to verbalize the rules of safe hiking including hiking on highways, cross-country, during the day and night. Scout must also verbalize what to do if they are lost.
  7. Demonstrate how to display, raise, lower, and fold the American flag. Scout must be able to show how to display an American flag on a wall both vertically and horizontally, must show how to raise an American flag to full and half staff, and lower the American flag. If a flag pole is not available, the Scout must tell how to raise and lower the American flag. Scout must also properly fold an American flag.
  8. Repeat from memory and explain in your own words the Scout Oath, Law, Motto, and Slogan. THIS REQUIREMENT IS SIGNED OFF AT THE SCOUTMASTER'S CONFERENCE. Scout must be able to repeat from memory the Scout Oath, Law, Motto, and Slogan AND be able to explain the meaning of each in their own words.
  9. Know your patrol name, give the patrol yell, and describe your patrol flag. Scout must be able to verbalize their Patrol name and Patrol yell. Scout must also be able to describe their Patrol flag. If a Patrol does not have a Patrol yell or flag, they cannot complete this requirement.
  10. Explain why we use the buddy system in Scouting. Scout must be able to verbalize the reasons we use the Buddy System in Scouting.
  11. a. Record your best in the following tests:

    Scout must do as many Push-ups, Pull-ups, and Sit-ups as possible. Scout must also measure how far they can jump in the Standing long jump and record how long it takes them to walk / run 1/4 mile. These results must be recorded in their Scout Handbook.

  12. b. Show improvement in the activities listed in requirement 10a after practicing for 30 days. Scouts must practice Push-ups, Pull-ups, Sit-ups, Standing long jump, and 1/4 mile walk / run for at least 30 days. At the end of at least 30 days, Scout must demonstrate Push-ups, Pull-ups, Sit-ups, Standing long jump, and 1/4 mile walk / run again showing improvement from the record in Requirement 10a.
  13. Identify local poisonous plants; tell how to treat for exposure to them. Scout must be able to describe or point out local poisonous plants (Poison Oak and Stinging Nettle) and tell how to treat for exposure to them. 
  14. a. Demonstrate the Heimlich maneuver and tell when it is used. Scout must be able to demonstrate the Heimlich maneuver and tell when it should be used.
  15. b. Show first aid for the following:

    Scout must be able to tell proper first aid for the injuries and conditions listed.

  16. Demonstrate scout spirit by living the Scout Oath (Promise) and Scout Law in your everyday life. This Requirement is done at the Scoutmaster's Conference. Scout must be able to recite the Scout Oath and Law from memory and be able to give several examples from their personal life at Scouts, at school, at home, or in the community that show that they live the Scout Oath and Law in their everyday life. Scouts who have three or more minor write ups or one or more major write ups or have been charged or convicted of a crime in the previous three months will not be signed off on this requirement. 
  17. Participate in a Scoutmaster conference. Scout must contact the Scoutmaster to arrange a Scoutmaster's Conference when all Requirements for Tenderfoot EXCEPT 7, 13, 14, and 15 are signed off by an authorized Adult or Scout. 
  18. Complete your board of review. Scout must CALL the Troop Advancement Chair AFTER COMPLETING the Scoutmaster's Conference to arrange for a Board of Review.

Please note that Requirement 15 - (Complete your Board of Review) MAY be done AFTER the Scout' has reached age 18.  All other requirements must be completed BEFORE the Scout's 18th Birthday.
