Purpose and Leadership

The following are instructions on how to be Grubmaster

WHO IS IN CHARGE: Patrol Leader and Grubmaster

During the Patrol Meeting and Troop Meeting Prior to the Campout

  1. The Patrol Leader will appoint a Grubmaster for the campout at the Patrol Meeting prior to the campout. The Patrol Leader should take his Patrol’s advancement needs into consideration when deciding who will be Grubmaster for the Patrol.
  2. The Patrol will plan a menu for the campout at the Patrol Meeting prior to the campout. The Grubmaster will write down the menu and determine what items including food and cooking utensils are needed based on the planned menu.
  3. The Grubmaster should check the Patrol Box and Patrol shelf for available food and cooking utensils, including fuel, which can be used with the planned menu.
  4. The Grubmaster will collect $15 or another agreed upon amount, at the Troop Meeting prior to the campout from each Patrol member that is planning on attending the campout. Scouts who are not at the Troop meeting must make arrangements with the Grubmaster to pay prior to the food being brought.
  5. Patrol members who do not pay for food prior to it being bought will not have food bought for them.
  6. The Grubmaster needs to make a list of the food and other supplies that must be purchased and make any adjustments due to budget concerns.

Purchasing the Food

  1. The Grubmaster needs to arrange with their parents a time to shop for food.
  2. It is recommended that an experienced Scout such as an older Patrol member, the APL, PL, Troop Instructor, or Troop Guide accompany the Grubmaster while he purchases food for the first time. This Scout is to act as an Advisor to the Grubmaster. The Grubmaster should still purchase the food and supplies.
  3. If purchasing food for a backpacking trip, remember that weight, bulk and sometimes water are a factor and need to be considered.
  4. On some campouts, water is scarce and needs to be considered.
  5. The Grubmaster needs to ensure that they have enough room at home to store the perishable food at their house or make other arrangements.
  6. If you check ahead of time, some markets may give discounts to Scouts.

Distributing Food for Backpacking Trips

  1. It is recommended that the Grubmaster place food, stoves, fuel, and other Patrol items into bags prior to arriving at the Scout Shack.
  2. Food and other supplies need to be evenly distributed to Patrol members that going on the hike.
  3. Glass containers should not be used for backpacking trips.
  4. Bread can be placed in a small box for transport.
  5. Any items that may be messy if the package accidentally opens should be placed in a zip loc bag.

During the Campout

  1. Food should be stored properly on the campout.
  2. Perishable food needs to be stored in an ice chest. Other food should be stored in a vehicle, closed Patrol Box, or Troop Trailer.
  3. Food may not be left out. Animals such as birds, squirrels, mice, and raccoons may get into food if not properly stored.
  4. Fuel cans should be placed in the bottom of Patrol member’s sleeping bags over night if temperatures are expected to be cold to avoid the possibility of the fuel cans freezing.

Returning to the Scout Shack

  1. The Patrol Leader and Grubmaster need to make sure that all leftover food is properly stored in the Patrol Box or Patrol shelf, taken home or disposed of properly.
  2. The ice chest used by the Patrol needs to be cleaned.
  3. All Patrol cooking utensils need to be cleaned and put away properly.

After the Campout

  1. Any Patrol items taken home to be cleaned, need to be returned and stored in the Patrol Box or Patrol shelf.
  2. The Grubmaster should put any left over money from the campout into an envelope marked with the Patrol’s name and give it to the Troop Treasurer to be placed in the Patrol’s account.
