This section contains specific job descriptions and information for each Junior Leader position in the Troop. The Leadership positions each have General and Specific requirements in order to receive Leadership credit for Star, Life, and Eagle Ranks. Some of the Leadership positions may not be used to receive Leadership credit for Eagle Rank.

Each Junior Leadership position has a list of requirements that must be met and signed off prior to having a Scoutmaster’s Conference for Star, Life, and Eagle Ranks.

Leadership credit will start accumulating on the date that the Junior Leader signs a copy of their position’s Job Description. Leadership credit is only given from September 1st through June 30th. The Scoutmaster may give some Scouts Leadership positions or projects during July and August.

Unless otherwise noted, Leadership terms are for the entire year until June 30th. Each Scout may only hold one Leadership position at a time unless no other Scouts desire Leadership positions.

The following priorities will be used when assigning appointed Leadership positions:

  1. Scouts working on Eagle Scout Rank that are 17 years old will be offered Leadership positions first.
  2. Scouts that are Life or Eagle Rank are given priority for the positions of Assistant Senior Patrol Leader.
  3. Scouts First Class, Star, and Life Ranks are given priority over other Scouts for Leadership positions.
  4. Scouts below First Class Rank may hold Leadership positions if there are no other qualified candidates.
  5. Only Eagle Scouts may be appointed by the Scoutmaster as Junior Assistant Scoutmasters (JASM)

The following priorities will be used for Senior Patrol Leader and Patrol Leader elections and Assistant Patrol Leader appointments:

  1. Senior Patrol Leader candidates should be Life or Eagle Rank. Star Ranked Scouts may run if there are no other qualified candidates who wish to run. No election will be held if there is only one qualified candidate running.
  2. Patrol Leader candidates should be at least First Class Rank to run for election.
  3. If no First Class or higher ranked candidates are in the Patrol, then Second Class Scouts may run for Patrol Leader.
  4. If no First or Second Class Scouts are in the Patrol, then Tenderfoot Scouts may run for Patrol Leader.
  5. Scouts First Class or higher should be given priority to be appointed Assistant Patrol Leader so that they may receive Leadership credit.

General Leadership Requirements

This section contains requirements for Leadership credit that all Junior Leadership positions must meet.

Setting a Good Example

Junior Leaders are in charge of running the Troop’s Program and leading the Scouts in the Troop. The younger Scouts in the Troop look up to the Junior Leaders and use them as an example of how they should act. All Junior Leaders are expected to set a good example by wearing the uniform appropriately, staying on task when required, being helpful to younger Scouts, and not being a behavior problem.

Attendance

Junior Leaders are expected to attend at least 75% of all Troop and Patrol meetings. Junior Leaders are also expected to attend at least 75% of Troop and Patrol campouts or Senior Patrol activities. Each Junior Leader is allowed to miss no more than two Troop and Patrol campouts or Senior Patrol activities in order to receive Leadership credit.

Training

All Junior Leaders must have a briefing by an ASPL, the SPL, or Scoutmaster on their assigned positions responsibilities before starting to receive credit. Junior Leaders must also attend a Troop Junior Leader Training session that is offered during the summer and in January.

Leadership Log

All Junior Leaders are expected to maintain a Leadership Log. Junior Leaders should make notes in their Leadership Log about what they have done in their assigned Leadership position. Dates that each duty was performed should be included in the Leadership Log. The Leadership Log must be brought to their Rank Advancement Scoutmaster’s Conference in order to show that they have demonstrated Leadership.

Evaluation

All Junior Leadership positions will receive a monthly evaluation by the Leadership position that supervises them so that Junior Leaders will know what they are doing well and where they need to improve. These evaluations will be used at the Scoutmaster’s Conference to determine Leadership credit.
