WILDERNESS SURVIVAL
CHALLENGE
This Page Last Updated on 12/10/2006

This is a challenge for Scouts attending the Wilderness Survival Trip on
Memorial Day Weekend to try on a campout prior to the trip.
Seniors going on the Wilderness Survival trip, I challenge each Scout to
take no more than 20 items with you on one of your campouts prior to
Memorial Day Weekend.
Here are the rules:
- Clothing
- ALL clothing is counted as separate items, except:
- ONE Pair of socks will be counted as one item
- ONE Pair of shoes or hiking boots will be counted as one item.
Hiking Boots should be worn.
- ONE Pair of gloves will count as one item.
- ALL other clothing will count as one item each including:
- All headwear including hats and beanies (One item for each)
- Shirt
- Jacket or sweatshirt
- Underwear
- Pants
- Sleeping Clothes
- Any other clothing items
- Food
- Each food item counts as one item
- Food in a small package will count as one item together (ie: Bag of
chips or Beef Jerky)
- All eating utensils, stoves, fuel, and other cooking items count as
one item each.
- Shelter
- Tents can be brought if there is a possibility of rain, but if used
will count as 10 items, so plan on some other shelter.
- Each item you bring for shelter, counts as one item each
- One item for each tarp, poncho, or survival blanket
- One item for each rope
- One item for each stake
- Sleeping Bag and Stuff Sack count as 3 items if used, but should be
brought, just in case.
- Each of the following items count as one item each
- Blanket
- Sleeping Pad
- Pillow
- Other Items
- All other items brought will count as one item each
- One flashlight with one set of batteries will count as one item
- At least one water bottle must be taken and counts as one item
- Each match counts as one item each
- Any PERSONAL MEDICATION MUST be taken and will not count as an item
- A deck of cards, journal or a camera can be brought for free and not
counted towards your items
- Your backpack will not count as an item unless it is used when you
get to camp.
There are ways to have more than 20 items to use, but you will have to be
resourceful and figure it out on your own without cheating.
If you think this challenge is hard, the Wilderness Survival trip will be
even more challenging.
Please let me know if you accept my challenge. I also have several
Wilderness Survival books which I can loan to interested Scouts and have a
table top exercise for the Scouts to do at camp.
Good Luck, and let me know if you have any questions. Clarifications or
updates may be posted later.
